Fellows
Foundation Year 2 (F2) Fellowship
We have a recurring F2 rotational role, which offers a great opportunity for four months working with the Simulation Education team. This is a unique opportunity for a foundation doctor to gain a variety of experience, above and beyond the usual clinical placements.
Paediatric Clinical Simulation Fellow
We also host a Paediatric Clinical Simulation Fellow. This one year post is operated as a clinical appointment to the Paediatric Intensive Care Unit at Bristol Children’s Hospital, University Hospitals Bristol and Weston NHS Foundation Trust. The Fellow post combines delivery of simulation education as part of the Paediatric Simulation Programme with clinical duties in Paediatric Intensive Care (working time split 50/50) and provides opportunities to gain a medical education qualification from the University of Bristol (TLHP). This post would be suitable for a trainee who has a minimum of core training in a parent specialty such as Paediatrics, Emergency Medicine or Anaesthesia. Previous experience of simulation education, though helpful, is not essential. The successful candidate will be developed through the combination of a structured faculty development programme and mentorship.
Emergency Department (ED) Fellows
Additionally, we host 3x ED Fellows within our team, one of which is a senior post and two are junior, all of which are one year posts. The ED Fellows work in the Bristol Royal Infirmary Emergency Department 80% of their time and spend 20% of their time with the Simulation Services team, expanding their knowledge of simulation based education, running sims as part of the Point-of-Care programmes and exploring project opportunities of their own. Please see the below summary of the role, kindly provided by previous ED Fellows:
This 12-month (80:20) post offers the exciting opportunity to:
- Attend a Simulation Instruction for Beginner’s course (SICB) and then a debriefing course (iTRUST) to provide you with the skills and understanding of how to design, deliver and debrief a simulation session.
- Deliver ward-based simulation teaching (point of care) in a variety of locations across the trust including Bristol Royal Infirmary, Bristol Children’s Hospital, Weston Hospital, Bristol Eye Hospital, Bristol Heart Institute and St Michael’s Hospital.
- Be a member of faculty on a range of courses aimed at a variety of learners including trainees (Adult & Paediatrics), nurses, International Medical Graduates (IMGs), foundation doctors & students.
- Be involved in Outreach sessions aimed at young people in school or college to introduce them to different careers in the NHS.
- Direct established courses or take the opportunity to develop your own.
- Arrange and deliver simulation scenarios in the emergency department. There is allocated time on the rota for you to deliver these sessions.
- Work alongside an amazing and exceptionally supportive multidisciplinary Simulation Team.
This role provides a fantastic experience in teaching, leadership and organizational skills. There is a lot of flexibility in the role to get involved in sessions that correspond to your interests, with lots of opportunities to develop your portfolio.
The ED Fellowships will be advertised on the Trust Careers website: Emergency Department - University Hospitals Bristol and Weston (uhbwcareers.nhs.uk).
Work Experience
Our Trust offers work experience student placements throughout the year, to give them a week’s experience looking at all areas of healthcare within our hospitals. As part of this week, students spend some limited time with our simulation team to get an idea about what we do. For more details on this, please visit www.uhbristol.nhs.uk/work-for-us/work-experience/.
We are also able to offer direct placements with our simulation team to give students a more in-depth view of what we do in Simulation Services. For more details on Simulation placements, please contact the team on the details below.
Please note, due to the clinical areas we visit as part of work experience placements, all students must be 16 years old or above. We are unable to accept any students below the age of 16.
Undergraduate Electives
We welcome applications from students studying towards a broad range of healthcare professions to join us for their elective placements. This is a great opportunity to become part of an education team and receive mentorship from experienced clinicians and educators. Previous students have successfully run projects, developing and delivering simulation activities. Local rules and related costs associated with electives within UHBT will apply.
