Southwest Intensive Care Mechanical Ventilation (SIMV)

The Southwest Intensive Care Mechanical Ventilation (SIMV) Courses are a series of multi-disciplinary simulation based courses focused on mechanical ventilation in critically ill patients. These courses are delivered by experts using the latest manikin technology.

Level 1 aims to improve candidates' understanding of mandatory ventilation and managing commonly encountered difficulties such as refractory hypoxaemia, hypercapnia and high peak inspiratory pressures.

Highlights/Objectives:

  • Small group teaching from ventilation experts

  • Opportunity to use real ICU ventilators with high-fidelity manikins

  • Explore commonly encountered ventilation problems and their solutions

  • Multi-disciplinary simulation scenarios

Target audience:

Level 1 is designed for doctors undertaking stage 1 ICM or Core/ACCS training in Anaesthesia, Emergency Medicine or other acute specialities. As a multi-disciplinary course it is also open to nurses and physiotherapists with an interest in critical care. The course will provide pre-course learning to help optimise the candidates learning on the day.

More senior candidates with a desire to cover special circumstances, dyssynchrony and pressure support modes are advised to attend the Level 2 course, due to start in 2020. If you have any questions regarding these courses, please contact us on: SIMVCourses@gmail.com.
