Bristol Medical Simulation Centre (BMSC) was established in January 1997 as an innovative collaborative venture between the University of Bristol and the clinical departments of University Hospitals Bristol NHS Foundation Trust. It was the first simulation centre to be opened in the UK, giving students and qualified practitioners access to the first full-body high-fidelity human patient simulator in Europe. Since then, the simulation centre has expanded its portfolio of activities to include multi-disciplinary input from all clinical specialties within UH Bristol and neighbouring Trusts. The centre now boasts access to 12 medium/high fidelity patient manikins in four AV monitored simulation suites including a fully equipped operating theatre, anaesthetic room, collapsible ambulance, and a 6-bedded high dependency ward.
Throughout its 16-year history, BMSC remains unique as the most successful self-funding clinical simulation centre in the world. Via successful commercial collaboration with industry partners (GlaxoSmithKline UK and GlaxoSmithKline Ireland, Baxter UK and Baxter Europe, Cook Medical, Abbott UK, Novartis, Astra Zeneca, Philips Healthcare), University of Bristol Medical & Dental Schools, University of the West of England (UWE), and the Severn Postgraduate Medical Deanery (Health Education South West) Schools of Surgery, Anaesthesia, & Emergency Medicine the Centre provides a vibrant programme of activities. BMSC hosts 107 different courses, delivering 11,330 educational hours each year, and provides training to an average of 1,289 candidates each year. Collectively, since opening, Bristol Medical Simulation Centre has provided training to an aggregate of over 18,000 individual attendees.
The BMSC programme is central to the development and implementation of a comprehensive simulation strategy for the University Hospitals Bristol NHS Foundation Trust working towards the pillars of training, quality improvement, patient safety and research. In particular it has integrated simulation as a tool central to the institutional strategy for quality improvement and patient safety, through initiatives such as human factors and team training curriculum and the development of educational interventions to address issues highlighted through institutional governance and risk reporting systems.
BMSC offers an outstanding level of expertise and research work conducted at the centre has been widely published (70 peer-reviewed journal articles and poster presentations). This expertise, combined with the innovative technology we use to deliver our multidisciplinary healthcare training programmes, and extensive knowledge of debriefing techniques, creates an effective and memorable educational experience.
BMSC has immediate access to a wide range of consumables and equipment that allows the realistic reproduction of clinical areas. In addition BMSC possesses a large range of human patient simulators in the UK potentially allowing introduction to various different high fidelity adult and paediatric simulators (including a neonate) with the software packages provided by three different simulator manufacturers. There is also a selection of clinical part-task trainers and lower fidelity manikins.

- A fully integrated SMOTS digital AV system with the ability to record, stream live and playback audio and video to various areas of the centre. There are five fixed and three mobile AV units which can be remotely controlled and can capture monitor outputs as well as AV (with additional output sources on offer). This system can be used for video debriefing.
